One of the best Sarasota traditions, in my opinion, is the Boat Parade of lights.
As spectators lounge in beach chairs along the route, participants sail past with their beautiful creations. Captains often work on their boats for weeks ahead of time, and displays range from animated and spectacular, to funny, to beautiful and touching. There will be prizes for each of 5 classes of boats, as well as the coveted Most Creative trophy which is awarded every year and sits on display at Marina Jack Restaurant.
The parade is taking place at 6pm on Saturday December 8, 2012. The best viewing spots on land are Bayfront (Island) Park, Centennial Park, City Island (Ken Thompson Park), Marina Jack restaurant and the Van Wezel with plenty of parking. The organizers have changed the VIP spot to the Marina Jack’s fuel dock, but the best seat in the house is from your own boat, or even better, your friends boat!
A cash donation will be made to the Suncoast Charities for Children, Inc. from all of the proceeds of this event. Charities for Children is requesting that parade attendees bring a donation of infant and toddler diapers, baby wipes and infant/toddler educational toys. Donations will be accepted at Marina Jack Restaurant and the entrance to Bayfront Park.
Sarasota, Florida is the sophisticated city with a small town heart, and the Boat Parade of lights is one of those events that just reminds you of what a fantastic place this really is.
