In a city known for its pristine beaches, cultural attractions, world-class botanical gardens and activities. Galas and festivals for all ages, Sarasota is rarely linked with the word “weird.”
That all changed with the beaching of Lego Man on the Number 1 Beach in the Country, Siesta Key, Sarasota, FL.
Wearing a shirt emblazoned with “NO REAL THAN YOU ARE,” an eight-foot-tall, 100-pound fiberglass Lego look-alike washed ashore in October. Much speculation followed: was it a publicity stunt by the newly-opened Legoland Amusement Park between Tampa and Orlando? Officials there said, no way. Could it have been connected with the international chalk festival in downtown Sarasota and the artist who used Lego figures as his inspiration for his street art? Perhaps.
Whatever, the figure caused enough of a stir to land Lego Man as the #2 Most Oddball News Story in Time Magazine‘s 2011 tribute to all that is weird.
Lego Man remains in custody in the Sarasota County jail, until such time as he is claimed by the owner or the man who found him. According to Time, “The response to a media inquiry via email to the artist in question remained in character: “I am glad I crossed over. Although it was a hell of a swim. Nice weather here and friendly people. I think I am gonna stay here for a while. A local sheriff escorted me to my new home”.
We love Sarasota, too, Lego Man. Enjoy the weather, the people, and, of course, the beaches. And if you want to settle here and the constables will let you, please call True Sarasota Real Estate.
