Sarasota real estate comes with so many cultural and artistic offerings, and so we’re delighted to announce that tickets go on sale today, Friday, March 23, at 11 a.m. for this year’s Sarasota Film Festival (SFF). The SFF, which runs from April 13 through April 22, 2012, will be screening 235 different movies from 30 countries.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.sarasotafilmfestival.com, where you can also download the new Sarasota Film Festival iPhone app, which lists all of this year’s films, venues, and show times, and gives you convenient searches and the ability to rate movies as you watch them.
2012 will mark the SFF’s 14th year. The Festival’s stated mission is “to present unique and high-quality cinema in a festival atmosphere for the purpose of educating, stimulating and entertaining audiences,” and the SFF continues to accomplish this mission with surprising success. Variety, the entertainment-trade weekly, has praised the SFF as “the acme of regional film festivals.”
This year’s Festival also promises the most captivating and eclectic list of guests yet. Director Jack Schreier’s new film Robot & Frank will open the festival on Friday, April 13, at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Both Schreier and the film’s star, actor Frank Langella, will attend the opening night festivities. The SFF’s “Centerpiece” film, Dark Horse, will be screened on Friday, April 20, at the Sarasota Opera House at 7:30 p.m. Director Todd Solondz will attend.
And Robert F. Kennedy’s daughter, documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy, will present her new film Ethel, an examination of the life of her mother and Senator Kennedy’s widow, Ethel Kennedy. Ethel will be seen at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, and at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 16, at the Regal Cinemas Hollywood 20.
Under African Skies will be this year’s closing night film. It screens at the Sarasota Opera House on Saturday, April 21. Directed by Academy Award nominee Joe Berlinger, Under African Skies is the story of Paul Simon going to South Africa in 1985 to work with local musicians and learn how to play their music. That collaboration turned into Simon’s 1986 album Graceland.
In addition to the SFF, Sarasota is home to several annual music festivals, an opera, a symphony, and a variety of galleries and museums. Sarasota’s incredible cultural community is one of the reasons so many are inspired to buy real estate and make a home here.
